The Light in the Forest
Bestiary - Ursa Magnus
A documentation of the beasts and creatures known to inhabit the Whytingwald. I have only included those creatures that can be verifiably known to be true, as I’ve seen these beings, or at least, evidence of these beings for myself. ~ The Venerable Bart of Bohommon, High Scholar & Indisputable Documentarian of the Entire World.
Before my trip through the Frosted Isles, never in my life had I seen a bear so large and ferocious as the one I saw in the caverns west of Halldor’s Hold. This monstrosity dwarfed most every beast I’ve come across. The locals insisted it was small for its kind, but by my estimation this is simply a result of the Varger propensity for exaggeration. “The fish was this big…” tales abound in these lands. None-the-less, the bear easily stood twenty feet in height, and nearly as broad in shoulder, it was so heavy that the ground shook when it walked, and its claws were half the length of a man. Though it would have hardly needed them to hold its own. The sheer weight of its blows was enough to crush any man who dared to get too close. The Vargers claim when the bears grow to this size, they fear nothing, even fire, and have been known to flatten wooden walled settlements when pray becomes scarce in their normal roaming lands. Thus, the Vargers find it more practical to lose a few warriors hunting these beasts in their own homes than entire villages waiting for them to come out in search of food.
